Monica Botkier was known for years as the designer of one of the hottest “it” handbag lines. While she still designs that handbag line, and it is still hot as ever, she added shoes to her design roster a few years back. Just like her handbags, her shoes are truly amazing. They are fashion forward, comfortable, well made, beautiful and classics. Being an accessory fanatic, Monica Botkier is my kind of girl, a girl after my own heart, and at times, my wallet :) . Now if she would only start designing jewelry…But in the meantime, here is a sneak peek into designer Monica Botkier.

The Shoe Goddess: When did you first become interested in shoes?

Monica Botkier: I’ve had a love affair with shoes for as long as I can remember. In my mind, handbags and shoes are both BFF!

TSG: Did you always know you were going to eventually make a shoe collection?

MB: Yes. Since Botkier launched I’ve had many requests from fans to make a shoe collection and was just waiting for the right time.

TSG: How was the transition from bags to shoes? And have any of your bags inspired your shoes?

MB: It was a very natural transition but shoes are much more difficult to make, it’s a labor of love. The bags definitely inspire the shoe collection and they are intrinsically linked.  I feel it’s important to infuse the same downtown, cool aesthetic into the shoe collection as well.

TSG: Who or what inspires you most?

MB: NYC is my greatest inspiration. There is a seductive pulse and energy in this city that triggers my creativity.

TSG: Can a woman ever have too many shoes?

MB: I used to think so, but now I’m not so sure. I am officially a shoe addict.

TSG: Talk about the inspiration for your latest line.

MB: This is our fall design statement:

‘Rocker Chic on Crosby Street’

“Leather. Zippers. Studs… the Botkier Fall 09 collection flaunts all the details we love about Botkier. Taking it back to street chic NYC cool. Inspired by the seductive pulse of New York City streets and my favorite pair of worn in, black leather motorcycle pants. Handbags and shoes in a palette of moody darks and sexy neutrals that get better with age. Slouchy silhouettes that live with us. This is quintessential Botkier.

TSG: What shoe must every woman have in her closet?

MB: A pair of flats that are sexy and a killer pair of heels that are comfortable.

TSG: If you could bring only one pair of shoes on your next trip, what would they be?

MB: Ahh, I’m hoping my next trip will be somewhere tropical where I can spend a lot of time on the beach! I would bring my silver, slim fit havianas. I love them!

TSG: What shoes are you wearing now?

MB: The Marnie boot in black.

TSG: Which shoe designer has inspired you the most?

MB: Christian Louboutin. I admire the detailed craftsmanship that goes into his collections. His style is very feminine, yet edgy.

TSG: What can always be found in your bag?

MB: My blackberry, gum, sunglasses, trigger cosmetic case, Claudia wallet, cards, a pair of flats (so I can change out of my heels!) and my favorite wood grain tape measure. I just moved into a new house so I bring this around everywhere so if I see something I like I can take measurements on the spot!

TSG: What is more important – a great bag or great shoes?

MB: Please don’t make me choose! That’s like asking me which one of my children is my favorite.

TSG: When in your career did you decide to start designing shoes?

MB: In 2006 I felt the brand was strong enough and it was a great time to debut a new category.

TSG: What is your dream celebrity to be seen in your footwear?

MB: Well I adore Angelina Jolie, and she is frequently seen in Botkier bags including the “Sasha.”  I would love to see her rock the shoes too.

TSG: A word to our readers – anything you would like to add?

MB: I believe in fusing luxury and functionality, and that is especially important for shoes. Shoes should be sexy but also comfortable. I don’t believe in suffering for fashion… too much ;)
